Common questions

Where do I find the VIN?
Look through the windshield at the driver's side of the dashboard, on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb, or on the title, registration or insurance card. It is always 17 characters and never contains the letters I, O or Q.
What does the free check include?
Safety recalls, specs and the newest photos and records, the VIN Grade, and a list of what is still unknown. The title brand check is part of the full report where it is available for the VIN; the free report tells you which before you pay.
Why does my VIN say the check digit is wrong?
The 9th character is a check digit calculated from the other 16. If it doesn't match, one character was almost always typed wrong. Common mix-ups: 0 and D, 8 and B, 5 and S, 2 and Z. We suggest the most likely correction.
Can I search by license plate?
Yes. Choose “License plate”, enter the plate and the state. We find the VIN registered to that plate and open its report. Coverage depends on the state.
